Sundaram Iyer Day
Sundaram Iyer, the father of Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi, is commemorated on his aradhana day, observed today (29/02/2024). At the age of sixteen, he embarked on a career as a clerk, earning a monthly wage of two rupees. Demonstrating intelligence, diligence, and affability, he quickly mastered the art of drafting legal documents. Sundaram Iyer navigated official and public interactions with tact, obtaining a pleader's license without undergoing any formal tests, a privilege available at that time. His professional success allowed him to build a spacious home with two sections—one for personal use and the other as a guest house.
Additionally, Sundaram Iyer purchased land at the North Eastern end of the town, generously donating it to the public as a cremation ground. Known for his hospitality, his family provided meals for visitors, and even criminals showed respect by refraining from causing any harm to him or his belongings. Vishwanatha Swamigal's composition of the 108 names of Bhagavan includes the tenth name, "Sundaraya tapah phalaya," signifying that the birth of Bhagavan to Sundaram Iyer was the outcome of Sundaram Iyer's profound penance.
